E&OE TRANSCRIPT

PRESS CONFERENCE

MELBOURNE

MONDAY, 15 DECEMBER 2014

SUBJECT/S: Incident in Martin Place

On behalf of the Opposition I wish to make a brief statement on the very serious matters unfolding in Martin Place in Sydney.

Today is an incredibly difficult day for Sydney and Australia.

There are many innocent people caught up in this horrifying incident in Martin Place.

Today, all of Australia is thinking of them, and all of Australia is thinking of their families.

Australians are shocked, but we won't be shaken.

We face moments like this with resolute spirit.

At times like this, it's more critical than ever that the Australian community be solid, stick together, be united.

I spoke to the Prime Minister this morning at about 11 o'clock to offer him the Opposition's full support.

Australians can be assured that we are one when it comes to maintaining Australia's safety and security.

Like the Prime Minister and the Premier, I have full confidence in the ability of our law enforcement agencies to handle this most serious matter, and I thank them for the work they are doing right now as I speak.

Like all Australians, I sincerely hope and pray that this matter can be resolved peacefully.

Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen will come in in a moment and talk about the MYEFO statement of the Government, but again I reiterate the Opposition's complete support for the Government at this most difficult time, and again, I commend our law enforcement agencies for the work they are doing right now to help resolve this dreadful situation.

Thank you very much.
