Jobs and Skills Expos to help Queensland workers

06 October 2012

The first Jobs and Skills Expo to support Queensland public sector workers facing redundancy through state government cuts will be held in Brisbane later this month.

Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations Bill Shorten and Minister for Employment Participation Kate Ellis today announced details of the three upcoming Jobs and Skills Expos being delivered by the Australian Government as part of an $850,000 support package for the Queensland workers facing redundancy.

“The first of these expos will be held at Brisbane’s Convention and Exhibition Centre on 26 October,” Mr Shorten said.

“It will be delivered by the Former Origin Greats (FOGS) who have a long history of supporting Australian Government employment initiatives and have successfully run seven Indigenous Employment and Careers Expos in Queensland this year.

“This expo – and the two to follow in Logan and Townsville – will provide information about a broad range of employment and training options for the thousands of workers facing the axe from state government cuts to the public service.”

Ms Ellis said the other two expos will be held in Logan on 15 November and Townsville on 12 December, and will be delivered by the Department of Human Services (DHS).

“We have proven success with these expos, bringing together employers, job seekers and training providers in a single location to create a one-stop-shop for jobs and training,” she said.

“The Australian Government has delivered 60 expos across Australia, with more than 22,000 people connected with employment and training opportunities.

“The expos will be of great benefit to the 14,000 Queensland public sector workers who will lose their jobs through the Newman Government’s cuts.”

The Jobs and Skills Expos will be supported by up to 30 jobs and information workshops in mainly regional locations, offering advice including accessing financial and mental health counselling.

The three-hour sessions are being delivered by experienced private sector employment experts, together with the Australian Government’s Local Employment Coordinators and officials from the Departments of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, Human Services and  Innovation, Industry, Science, Research and Tertiary Education.

Spaces for the workshops are limited. To register and for more information go to www.deewr.gov.au.
