VAISAKHI 2016

On behalf of the Federal Parliamentary Labor Party, we send our best wishes to all those celebrating Vaisakhi.

Vaisakhi is a very special time for many people in the community, but especially for the Sikh community that calls Australia home. Vaisakhi marks the establishment of the Khalsa and is a time of great celebration in homes and Gurdwaras across the country.

We thank the Sikh community for the outstanding contribution they continue to make to Australia. Labor has always recognised this contribution which spans over many decades.

The actions of Guru Gobind Singh united a people and strengthened the Sikh movement. Guru Gobind Singh stood up to the Mughal oppressors, stressing that the Sikh cause was one of protection and peace, not hatred.

Vaisakhi marks a time where a movement stood up for their beliefs and opposed an oppressive regime.

Sikh teachings reflect many Australian values we hold dear including equality and the importance of family.

We thank the Sikh community for making our nation stronger, and wish everyone a very happy and prosperous Vaisakhi.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.
