CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
MELBOURNE
TUESDAY, 25 DECEMBER 2018

BILL SHORTEN, LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION: The wonderful team here at Foodbank are making sure that families who are doing it tough don't go hungry this Christmas. And lots of charity organisations around Australia are doing the same.

CHLOE SHORTEN: Thank you to all those Australians who have given generously so that people have a safe place to stay, a hot meal to eat or maybe just a present under the tree.

BILL: Not all of us will get to spend Christmas with the people we love. There are the men and women in the Australian Defence Force spending today far from home in the service of our country. We thank them and their families, who also serve.

CHLOE: And thank you to all the emergency services personnel working through Christmas and New Year to help keep our community safe.

BILL: And we should never forget all those Australians for whom this is just another working day, people working long hours to put food on the table for their families.

All of us are lucky to live in a great country. Chloe and I hope that you get some time to relax this summer, to celebrate and catch up with the people you care most about.

TOGETHER: Merry Christmas everyone. Have a safe and happy New Year.
