I recently travelled to Papua New Guinea to walk the Kokoda trail, a 96 km journey that took me through the dense rainforests and mountains where Australian and Japanese soldiers fought during World War II.
It was a journey that gave me a greater understanding of the historic events that took place at Kokoda and the challenging conditions that confronted our troops.
I also used the trip to provide some much needed assistance to families who face a very different challenge, the challenge of raising a child with autism.
Autism Spectrum Disorder affects a growing number of Australians, and autistic children have special needs that often require a specialised education.
So I asked individuals and businesses to sponsor me on my trek along Kokoda, with all funds raised going to the Western Autistic School in Melbourne's western suburbs.
I have now completed the trek, but there is still time to make your donation.
The Western Autistic School is a world-leading school for children with autism, and they greatly need your assistance.
The Victorian Government has pledged to construct a new campus for the school, which will open in 2010, but there are many other costs they face in the meantime. For more information about the Western Autistic School and the wonderful work they do, you may wish to look at their website, westernautisticschool.vic.edu.au.
Your support will enable the school to provide welcome relief for families with autistic children.
I would greatly appreciate your support for this valuable organisation.
Kind regards,
Bill.
