APPOINTMENT OF NEW CHIEF OF THE DEFENCE FORCE - MONDAY, 16 APRIL 2018

16 April 2018

Federal Labor welcomes the appointment of Lieutenant General Angus Campbell as Chief of the Defence Force.

General Campbell has had a career of exemplary service, including his time in 3RAR; taking command of Australian forces deployed in the Middle East Area of Operations and Operation Sovereign Borders; heading the Office of National Security in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet; through to being Chief of Army.

Time and again General Campbell has demonstrated he’s a creative and innovative leader of the highest quality who will do a great job steering our Defence Force.

Federal Labor also welcomes the appointment of Vice Admiral David Johnston as Vice Chief of the Defence Force.

As the Chief of Joint Operations at HQJOC, Vice Admiral Johnston has managed Australia’s forces during a time of high operational tempo, with over 2,000 people in the field. Those operations have covered a wide range of activities, from Iraq to the Philippines, and Australia’s success is in no small part due to David’s exceptional work.

Federal Labor greatly appreciates the work done by Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin during his tenure as Chief of the Defence Force.

He has been an exemplary leader during a time when the threats to Australia and the demands on the ADF have been high.

Australia is stronger and safer for the work he has done. Federal Labor will always appreciate his honest, clear-eyed and considered approach to the job.

Federal Labor also greatly appreciates the work done by Vice Admiral Ray Griggs in his decorated career.

As well as being one of the most decorated senior members of our Defence Force, Vice Admiral Griggs is particularly well known to members of parliament through his role managing the Australian Defence Force Parliamentary Program. Vice Admiral Griggs has helped make sure Australia has the modern Defence Force Australians expect, capable of meeting today’s threats, and is held in high regard by everyone who knows him.

Federal Labor welcomes the appointment of Air Vice Marshal Mel Hupfeld as the Chief of Joint Operations; Rear Admiral Mick Noonan as the Chief of Navy; and Major General Rick Burr as Chief of Army.

All three step into crucial roles at a time of leadership change for the ADF, and Federal Labor is confident they will perform those roles with distinction.
